Employers may not ask about or use a job seeker’s past pay. Every job, promotion, or transfer posting must include a good-faith pay range. Bosses can’t punish people for refusing to share pay history or for asking for the range. If a candidate volunteers past pay, it may be used only to raise an offer without creating pay gaps. Workers can sue for $1,000–$10,000 or actual damages plus fees. This aims to boost pay transparency and reduce wage inequality.
