1000 Friends of Florida is a statewide nonprofit founded in 1986 that promotes smart growth, land and water conservation, climate resilience, and equitable community planning. The organization educates citizens, produces research and planning tools, lobbies at the state and local level, and pursues litigation when necessary to protect natural lands, affordable housing, transportation alternatives, and meaningful public participation in planning decisions.
Land conservation and open-space protection; growth management and smart-growth planning; climate resilience and sea-level rise adaptation; transportation alternatives and infill redevelopment; affordable housing and community revitalization; public participation in planning, planning law and litigation; state and local legislative advocacy on land-use and environmental issues.
Primarily foundation grants and individual donations, supplemented by membership dues, program grants, and occasional government or philanthropic project funding.
