About the Organization

The American Booksellers Association (ABA) is a national trade association that supports and advocates for independent bookstores in the United States. It provides members with education, networking, advocacy, resources, and technology, and promotes literacy, community engagement, and diverse voices.

Policy Goals

ABA typically advocates on issues affecting independent bookstores and small businesses, including free expression, antitrust and competition policy, swipe fee reform, tax and tariff issues, health insurance, climate-related policy, immigration, ADA website compliance, gift card fraud, and other bookstore business concerns.

Funding

Primarily funded by membership dues and revenue from member services, events, and related programs.

Affiliates

Independent bookstores nationwide; regional independent booksellers associations; volunteer board of directors; advisory councils including the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council.

Legal Structure

Not-for-profit trade association; 501(c)(6) professional association
