About the Organization

The American Optometric Association (AOA) is the national professional association for doctors of optometry in the United States. Founded in 1898, it promotes eye and vision care, supports optometrists through education and resources, and advocates for public health and the profession of optometry.

Policy Goals

Health care and public health policy related to eye and vision care, optometry practice standards, Medicare and reimbursement, insurance coverage and access to care, contact lens safety, and other policies affecting the practice of optometry and patient eye health.

Funding

Primarily funded by member dues, conference and educational program revenue, sponsorships, and related association activities.

51 affiliated state associations; student affiliates; armed forces affiliates; doctors of optometry and optometry students; AOSA (American Optometric Student Association) through joint meeting activities.
