About the Organization

The California Nurse-Midwives Association (CNMA) is the professional association representing Certified Nurse‑Midwives and Certified Midwives in California. As the state affiliate of the American College of Nurse‑Midwives, CNMA promotes midwifery practice, advances equitable, evidence‑based reproductive and perinatal care, provides continuing education and professional support to members, and advocates to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes across the state.

Policy Goals

Advocates for policies expanding access to midwifery and full‑scope reproductive care, Medi‑Cal/Medicaid reimbursement and integration of midwives into primary and perinatal care, licensing and scope‑of‑practice laws for midwives, funding for midwifery education and birth centers, maternal mortality and morbidity reduction, racial equity and anti‑racism in maternity care, birth setting choice and safety, and related public health and family‑planning initiatives.

Funding

Primarily funded by member dues and fees (membership, continuing education, conferences), program and project grants, sponsorships, and charitable donations.

Affiliates

State affiliate of the American College of Nurse‑Midwives (ACNM); works with the California Nurse‑Midwives Foundation, local CNMA chapters, midwifery‑led birth centers and community health centers, and maternal‑health advocacy organizations and coalitions.
