The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that focuses on improving public health through science-based policy. Founded in 1971, CSPI works to promote safer and healthier foods, reduce diet-related diseases, ensure food safety, and increase transparency and accountability in the food and beverage industry.
CSPI typically pursues legislative and regulatory policies related to food safety standards, nutrition labeling, sugar and sodium reduction, marketing restrictions for unhealthy foods, alcohol policy, dietary guidelines, chemical and additive regulation, and public health transparency measures.
CSPI is primarily funded through foundation grants, individual donations, and publication revenues, and does not accept corporate funding from food, beverage, or pharmaceutical companies.
CSPI operates the Nutrition Action Healthletter and has collaborated with public health organizations such as the American Heart Association and other consumer advocacy and health policy groups.
