The Clearinghouse on Women’s Issues (CWI) is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit founded in 1974 that convenes monthly public programs, speakers, and networking to inform and mobilize around economic, health, educational, legal and civil-rights issues affecting women and girls. CWI’s mission is to eliminate bias and discrimination and to promote greater equity for diverse women at the local, national, and international levels.
Focuses on policies that advance gender equality and women’s economic security, protect civil and legal rights, expand access to health care (including reproductive health), promote educational equity (including Title IX and girls’ education), prevent violence against women, and oppose discrimination; pursues these goals through public education, coalition letters, amicus briefs, and convenings.
Operates on modest member dues, individual donations, occasional small grants and in‑kind support; historically volunteer-run with a minimal budget and no large endowment or paid staff.
Works with and has participated in coalitions with organizations such as the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education and the (formerly active) National Council of Women’s Organizations; has hosted meetings at and partnered with groups like the American Association of University Women and the American Council on Education; notable affiliated individuals include past leaders and long‑time members such as Joy Simonson, Carolyn Cook, and Dvora Lovinger.
