About the Organization

The Detroit City Council is the elected legislative branch of the municipal government of Detroit. It enacts local ordinances, adopts and amends the city budget, provides oversight of city departments and services, holds public hearings, and represents neighborhood and citywide constituent interests.

Policy Goals

Local governance and municipal ordinances; budgeting and taxation at the city level; public safety and policing policy; land use, zoning, and development approvals; housing and homelessness policy; transportation and public works; public health and human services; labor and municipal employment matters; economic development and neighborhood revitalization; environmental and sustainability initiatives.

Funding

Funded through the City of Detroit budget (municipal general fund) comprised primarily of local tax revenues—property and income taxes—plus fees, service charges, and state and federal grants that support city operations.

Affiliates

Works closely with the Mayor's Office, Detroit City Clerk, city departments (e.g., police, public works, transportation), municipal employee unions, neighborhood associations and community groups, and regional economic development entities.
