Disability Rights Florida is the state’s designated Protection & Advocacy (P&A) organization, founded in 1977 to provide free, confidential legal advocacy, investigation, education, and litigation to protect and advance the civil rights, dignity, and self-determination of people with disabilities across Florida.
Advocates for legislative and policy changes related to disability rights including access to Medicaid and Home- and Community-Based Services, health care, special education and transition services, accessible housing and transportation, employment accommodations and vocational services, voting access, prevention of abuse and neglect in institutions and jails, guardianship reform and supported decision-making, and other civil rights and accessibility protections.
Primarily funded by federal Protection & Advocacy formula grants (awarded through agencies such as Administration for Children and Families, SAMHSA, Rehabilitation Services Administration, HRSA, and Social Security Administration), supplemented by private donations, foundation grants, and other non‑profit revenue.
National Disability Rights Network (NDRN), state and local disability advocacy organizations and legal aid partners, client assistance programs, and collaborative partnerships with state agencies and community service providers.
