Emily Mine Information Group (EMIG)

About the Organization

A volunteer grassroots citizen group formed in Emily, Minnesota to collect, evaluate, and disseminate information about a proposed manganese mine; the group focuses on protecting local water resources and community health, conducting baseline testing, and equipping residents to engage in local decision-making.

Policy Goals

Local environmental protection, drinking water quality and monitoring, transparency in mining permitting and mineral lease decisions, public health safeguards, land use and resource management, and civic engagement/education.

Funding

Primarily small local donations and project grants from environmental nonprofits and academic partners; has received support for testing from academic institutions and a grant from an anti-mining/monitoring network.

Affiliates

Minnesota Lakes & Rivers Advocates, Western Mining Action Network, Macalester College, Tamarack Water Alliance; local founders and leaders such as Dan Brennan and Amy Flynn Brennan.
