About the Organization

Family Violence Appellate Project (FVAP) is a California-based nonprofit that provides free appellate legal representation, amicus briefs, trainings, and technical assistance to survivors of domestic and gender-based violence and their children. FVAP focuses on overturning dangerous trial-court orders, creating published appellate precedent, and improving access to safe housing and justice for survivors statewide.

Policy Goals

Advocacy and legal strategies focused on family law and domestic violence protections, access-to-justice reforms, appellate standards and precedent in custody and civil protection order cases, survivor housing and employment safety, and training/technical assistance for courts, advocates, and attorneys.

Funding

Primarily foundation and philanthropic grants, individual donations, and pro bono legal support from private law firms and corporate legal teams; revenue derives from charitable contributions and grant funding.

Affiliates

Co-founded by law students and associated with founder Sonya Passi; partners with pro bono attorneys from California law firms, domestic violence service networks such as the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, and legal aid organizations including statewide legal aid associations.
