Generations United is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that promotes intergenerational collaboration to improve the lives of children, youth, older adults, and families. Founded in 1986, the organization advances research, programs, technical assistance, public education, and federal/state advocacy to expand intergenerational programs and supports—including kinship/grandfamily services, shared sites, and intergenerational housing.
Advocates for intergenerational public policies and programs that benefit multiple age groups, including supports for kinship/grandfamilies, caregiving and family supports, aging services, child welfare and youth services, health care and nutrition access (e.g., Medicaid, SNAP), intergenerational housing and shared-site initiatives, and workforce/youth opportunity policies framed through an intergenerational lens.
Primarily funded by foundation and philanthropic grants, supplemented by government grants, corporate sponsors, membership dues, and individual donations.
Founded and closely networked with leaders and organizations such as the National Council on Aging, Child Welfare League of America, Children’s Defense Fund, and AARP; partners commonly include foundations, state/local aging and child-serving agencies, and national aging and child welfare organizations.
