Legal Council for Health Justice is a Chicago‑based nonprofit public interest law office (founded in 1987 as the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago) that uses the power of the law to secure dignity, opportunity, and well‑being for people facing illness, disability, stigma, and poverty. The organization provides direct legal representation, medical‑legal partnership services, impact litigation, community education, and policy advocacy to reduce health disparities.
Advances legislative and administrative policies promoting health equity and anti‑discrimination in health care; access to Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance; disability rights and Social Security benefits; expansion and funding of medical‑legal partnerships; housing stability and public benefits that affect health; patient privacy and confidentiality; and protections for people living with HIV and other chronic conditions.
Primarily funded through foundation grants and philanthropic donations, supplemented by government grants and contracts, fee‑for‑service programs, and individual contributions.
Works in partnership with hospitals, clinics and community organizations through Medical‑Legal Partnerships, collaborates with national MLP networks and local health and housing advocacy groups, and traces its roots to the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago.
