The National Employment Law Project (NELP) is a national nonprofit research and advocacy organization that advances policies and enforcement to improve wages, unemployment protections, workplace standards, and job quality for low-wage and unemployed workers. NELP produces legal and policy analysis, model legislation, advocacy campaigns, litigation support, and technical assistance for advocates, unions, legal services, and policymakers.
Labor and employment standards including minimum wage and living wage policies, wage theft prevention and enforcement, unemployment insurance and reemployment services, paid leave and paid sick days, fair scheduling and job quality, worker classification and independent contractor rules, workplace civil rights and immigrant worker protections, and enforcement of labor laws.
Primarily funded by foundation grants and philanthropic donations, supplemented by individual contributions and contracts for research and technical assistance.
Works closely with national and local labor unions (e.g., AFL-CIO, SEIU), worker centers and community organizations, legal services and public-interest law firms, civil rights groups, and progressive policy research organizations such as the Economic Policy Institute.
