The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) is a U.S.-based advocacy organization founded in 1974 that works to end the affordable housing crisis by advancing racially and socially equitable federal, state, and local policies to ensure people with the lowest incomes have safe, accessible, and affordable homes.
Advocates for increased federal and state funding for affordable housing, preservation of federally assisted housing, expansion of rental assistance and vouchers, the National Housing Trust Fund, tenant protections and anti-eviction measures, disaster recovery housing equity, anti-poverty measures, and racially equitable housing policy.
Primarily funded by philanthropic grants and foundation support, individual donations, membership and partner contributions, program and project grants (including a large unrestricted philanthropic gift announced in 2023), and occasional earned revenue.
Works closely with national and local housing and civil-rights groups such as the National Alliance to End Homelessness, ACLU, National Housing Law Project, National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials; notable individuals associated with NLIHC include founder Cushing N. Dolbeare and recent leaders Diane Yentel, Sheila Crowley, and President & CEO Renee M. Willis.
