The Native American Rights Fund (NARF) is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides legal representation, appellate litigation, education, and policy advocacy to protect and advance the rights of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian tribes, organizations, and individuals, with a focus on tribal sovereignty, treaty enforcement, cultural and religious protections, and access to justice for Indigenous peoples.
Advocacy and litigation on tribal sovereignty and self-determination; enforcement of treaties and federal Indian law; protection of tribal natural resources, cultural sites, and religious freedom; Indian child welfare and family law; voting and civil rights for Native peoples; environmental justice and land rights.
Primarily funded through foundation grants and philanthropic donations, supplemented by individual contributions, government grants, and litigation-related fees and support.
Works with tribal governments and tribal courts, national Native organizations such as the National Congress of American Indians, regional tribal associations, Native legal centers and university Indian law programs, and coalition partners in civil rights and environmental law.
