The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) is the U.S. nuclear industry's trade association that advocates for the use and expansion of nuclear energy. NEI represents utilities, reactor vendors, and service providers in policy and regulatory forums, promotes nuclear safety and licensing, supports research and deployment of advanced reactors and small modular reactors, and positions nuclear power as a low‑carbon component of the electricity mix.
Typically pursues legislative and regulatory policies that support nuclear generation and commercialization, including licensing and regulatory reform, spent fuel and waste-management solutions, federal and state financing and tax incentives, R&D funding for advanced and small modular reactors, workforce development, nuclear security and nonproliferation measures, and inclusion of nuclear in climate and clean-energy policy.
Primarily funded by membership dues and fees from nuclear utilities, reactor manufacturers, engineering and services firms, supplemented by sponsorships and event revenue.
