Shark Stewards is an international marine conservation nonprofit project focused on protecting sharks and critical ocean habitat through advocacy, science, education and grassroots organizing. The group works to end overfishing and the shark fin trade, advance marine protected areas and shark sanctuaries, run community science programs (Shark Watch) and mobilize public support for stronger species and ocean protections.
Marine conservation and wildlife protection policies including bans or restrictions on the shark fin trade, fishery regulation and bycatch reduction, establishment and enforcement of marine protected areas and shark sanctuaries, strengthened Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act protections, opposition to offshore drilling and other habitat-damaging activities, and community science and public-safety measures around shore-based fishing.
Primarily individual donations and small grants supplemented by fundraising activities; operates under fiscal sponsorship of Earth Island Institute which handles tax-deductible contributions.
