The Sierra Club is one of the United States' oldest and largest grassroots environmental organizations (founded 1892) that mobilizes members, conducts public education, advances litigation and lobbying, and organizes campaigns to protect wildlands, reduce pollution, and address climate change.
Advocates for strong climate action and a transition to renewable energy, protection and expansion of public lands and national parks, conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, clean air and water regulations, opposition to new fossil fuel infrastructure (pipelines, new drilling), promotion of environmental justice and clean transportation, and support for federal and state environmental legislation and regulation.
Primarily funded by membership dues and individual donations, supplemented by grants, fundraising events, and philanthropic support (often routed through the affiliated Sierra Club Foundation for tax-deductible contributions).
Sierra Club Foundation; Sierra Club Political Committee (Sierra Club PAC); national, state and local Sierra Club chapters; historically associated with conservationist John Muir.
Non-profit environmental advocacy organization (membership-based)
