About the Organization

Sightline Institute is an independent, nonpartisan nonprofit research and communications center (think tank) based in the Pacific Northwest. Founded in 1993, its stated mission is to make Cascadia a global model of sustainability by promoting strong communities, a green economy, and a healthy environment through policy research, analysis, and public-facing tools.

Policy Goals

Research and advocacy focus on environmental and natural resource policy, climate and clean energy transition, sustainable transportation and transit, land use and housing affordability (including pro-housing messaging), urban planning and livable cities, forest and wildfire resilience, sustainable economic development, and occasional work on democracy and governance reforms.

Funding

Primarily funded by private charitable foundation grants and individual donations, with a smaller share from invested funds and other revenues.

Affiliates

Founder and long-time executive director Alan Durning; a network of regional partners, fellows, board members and collaborating environmental, housing and transportation advocacy organizations across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and British Columbia; major relationships with philanthropic funders in the region.
