The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is a nonprofit public-interest environmental law firm that uses litigation, policy advocacy, and community engagement to protect natural resources, public health, and climate in the southeastern United States. SELC focuses on enforcing environmental laws, advancing clean energy, defending waterways and wetlands, promoting coastal resilience, and conserving forests and wildlife.
Clean energy and climate mitigation; air and water pollution control; wetlands and coastal resilience; protection and management of public lands and forests; conservation of biodiversity; environmental permitting, compliance, and enforcement; environmental justice and community health advocacy.
Primarily funded by foundation grants and philanthropic donations, supplemented by individual contributions and charitable fundraising.
Works in partnership with national and regional environmental organizations and local conservation groups, including Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Sierra Club, Audubon Society, Appalachian Voices, and various community-based advocates.
