About the Organization

The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) is a nonpartisan conservation organization founded in 1983 that works to preserve the redrock wilderness of the Colorado Plateau. SUWA pursues research, public education, administrative and legislative advocacy, litigation, and on-the-ground stewardship to secure permanent protections for public lands in southern Utah; it maintains offices in Salt Lake City, Moab, and Washington, D.C.

Policy Goals

Advocates for federal wilderness designation and other protective land-use designations; opposes oil and gas development, excessive road construction, and destructive off-road vehicle use on public lands; pursues strong BLM/Forest Service management rules, national monument defense, biodiversity and climate resilience protections, and uses litigation and congressional advocacy to advance these goals.

Funding

Primarily individual membership dues and private donations (roughly the majority of revenue), supplemented by foundation grants, small earned-income streams, and occasional fundraising events.

Affiliates

Participant in the Utah Wilderness Coalition and National Wilderness Coalition; frequent partners include Wilderness Workshop, The Wilderness Society, Sierra Club, Conservation Lands Foundation and other national and regional conservation groups; organizational leadership has included Executive Director Scott Groene and Board Chair Tom Kenworthy.
