The Virginia Food Industry Association (VFIA) is a state trade association that represents retail and wholesale food businesses operating in Virginia. VFIA provides government relations and public affairs advocacy, member services, industry resources and emergency operations support to supermarket chains, independent grocers, convenience stores, wholesalers and related suppliers, with the stated goal of protecting and advancing the interests of the food retail sector in the commonwealth.
Typically pursues state-level policies affecting the grocery and food retail sector, including grocery and sales tax issues, single-use bag and packaging regulations, alcohol and pharmacy retail rules, organized retail crime and theft prevention, food safety and supply-chain matters, energy and utility policy, and regulatory/compliance matters that affect retailers and wholesalers.
Primarily funded by member dues, corporate sponsorships and event/exhibit revenue from industry members (grocery chains, wholesalers, suppliers and service providers).
Works with national and state trade partners such as the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and state retail groups; board and leadership connections to major retailers (examples include Ahold Delhaize USA); notable officials who have led or represented VFIA include Melissa Assalone (executive director) and Parker Slaybaugh (former executive director).
