WaterLegacy is a Minnesota-based grassroots environmental non-profit founded in 2009 that advocates to protect lakes, rivers, wetlands, wild rice and community health from pollution and the impacts of sulfide mining. The organization combines legal and technical advocacy, citizen engagement, policy campaigns, and collaboration with Tribal governments to defend water quality standards and regulatory accountability.
Protecting and strengthening water quality standards, opposing sulfide/copper-nickel mining and related permits, defending wild rice (manoomin) protections, supporting Tribal Clean Water Act authority, demanding rigorous environmental review and enforcement, and promoting regulatory accountability and public participation.
Primarily individual donations and foundation grants, supplemented by occasional project grants and in-kind/pro bono legal support.
Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Minnesota Environmental Partnership, Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, founder Diadra Decker, WaterLegacy legal counsel and allied environmental attorneys.
